In search of the beginnings of Leszno. Archaeological traces of early medieval settlement in the town

What did Leszno look like a thousand years ago? Who were its inhabitants? Thanks to the latest archaeological discoveries, you can see material traces of the past and learn about the behind-the-scenes work of archaeologists. We invite you to a unique exhibition that combines knowledge, history and imagination.

Description and aims of the exhibition

The exhibition presents in an accessible and attractive form the results of archaeological research conducted in Leszno in the years 2008–2024 at three sites from the early medieval period. The main part of the exhibition consists of movable artefacts – ceramic vessels, stone and metal objects – which are direct traces of the former inhabitants of this area.

A special place is occupied by the latest discovery from 2024 – relics of a hillfort and a vast hillfort settlement, located at Henrykowska Street in the southern part of the town. For a better understanding of the significance of this find, a suggestive arrangement was prepared, the heart of which is a model depicting the appearance of the medieval hillfort and its surroundings.

The aim of the exhibition is to popularize knowledge about the history of Leszno and to bring archaeology closer as a science that allows not only to discover the past, but also to verify information contained in written sources from later periods.
