Encounters with nature – a summer family series at the Mini Zoo
Nature has been inspiring, delighting and teaching for centuries. We invite you to a series of family meetings, during which we will discover the world of plants and animals from the perspective of history, ethnography and everyday experiences. Workshops and an educational walk prepared jointly by the District Museum in Leszno and the Municipal Green Plant will allow us to look at the nature around us in a completely new way.

The program includes three events that combine knowledge with creative action and direct contact with nature. All meetings will take place at the Mini Zoo in Leszno. The organizers of the event are the District Museum in Leszno and the Municipal Green Plant in Leszno.

Dates and description of meetings

9 August 2026 (Sunday), 11.00 a.m. – 1.00 p.m.
Workshop "Herbs and flowers in traditional culture"

During the first meeting, we will move to the world of ancient beliefs, rites and traditions related to plants. An ethnologist from the District Museum in Leszno will talk about the importance of flowers and herbs in folk culture – their symbolism, use in medicine, magic and customs accompanying the most important holidays of the year.

In the workshop part, participants will weave wreaths of collected flowers and herbs together and prepare bouquets inspired by the tradition of consecrating herbs on the feast of Our Lady of Herbs.

Conducted by Ewa Tomaszewska and Mini Zoo staff.

26 August 2026 (Wednesday), 11.00 a.m. – 1.00  p.m.
"Flower Manufactory" workshops

Flowers have been present not only in nature for centuries, but also in arts and crafts. During the workshops, we will find plant motifs hidden in museum collections and talk about the symbolism of flowers and their place in contemporary customs.

At the end, participants will make their own paper compositions inspired by the world of plants, combining creativity with careful observation of nature.

Conducted by Magdalena Rolla

6 September 2026 (Sunday), 3.00 p.m. – 4.30 p.m.
Municipal zoo. A walk around the Mini Zoo

Can nature be part of a museum's story? During a family walk, we will find out that it is.

The starting point will be the figure of Jan Jonston – an outstanding seventeenth-century doctor, naturalist and scientist associated with Leszno, the author of one of the most important natural works of his era. His achievements will become an inspiration to discover together the richness of the world of plants and animals inhabiting the area of the Leszno Mini Zoo.

The walk will be conducted by staff from the Leszno District Museum and the Mini Zoo, who will talk about the history of the site and its current inhabitants. The meeting will be complemented by a nature-themed outdoor game requiring keen observation skills and a detective's instinct.

Conducted by Tomasz Rak and Hubert Żyto
