Promotion of the first full Polish edition of the book „Labirynt świata i raj serca” by Jan Amos Komeński
The Polish Historical Society - Poznań branch invites you to a meeting promoting the first complete Polish edition of the book "Labirynt świata i raj serca" by Jan Amos Komeński, which will take place on May 27, 2026, at 9:00 AM at the Collegium Historicum of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.
The meeting will be hosted by Dr. Kamila Szymańska, director of the District Museum in Leszno, and translator Wojciech Marzec.
"Labirynt świata i raj serca" is the most important work of early Czech literature, carrying a universal message about the search for meaning in life, harmony, and spiritual peace. The author, Jan Amos Komeński (1592–1670), the last bishop of the Unity of the Bohemian Brethren and a distinguished educator, was associated with Leszno, where he lived from 1628 to 1656. The first edition of the book, from 1631, was most likely published in that town.
The new publication is the first complete Polish edition of the work; previous editions were published in 1695 and 1914. The translation was made by Wojciech Marzec, a Bohemian scholar and doctoral candidate at the Jagiellonian University, who also provided commentary and textual analysis.
The edition is richly illustrated with original collages by Czech artist Miroslav Huptych. The Polish-Czech Scientific Society is the honorary patron of the publication. The book is published by the Leszno District Museum.
The book received the highest distinction - the GRAND PRIX AWARD in the Izabella 2025 competition for the most important museum events of the year in Greater Poland and their creators, in the "Scientific and publishing activity" category.
