The District Museum in Leszno invites you to one of the most important and most anticipated cultural events of the year – the Night of Museums! This unique event, which takes place all over Europe, gives you a unique opportunity to discover the museum's collections in a completely new light. The Night of Museums in Leszno has a long tradition, attracting crowds of lovers of history, art and culture every year.

This year's program includes many attractions, including the "Art of Taking Care of Clothes" workshops, a guided tour of the "Tales of Old Linen Chest" exhibition, a demonstration of the work of conservator, a presentation of militaria in the museum's collection (concerning soldiers' clothing), a story about Maria Leszczyńska, a presentation of Judaica and a unique historical walk towards the historic tenement houses in Leszno.This year there will also be live music, screenings of first films in the history of cinema and special activities for the youngest. Our museum publications and gadgets will be available at attractive, promotional prices.

When and where?

Two institutions joined the celebration of the Night of Museums.

The event will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at the District Museum in Leszno (31 G. Narutowicza Street, former synagogue) and on the square in front of the building. Participation in the Night of Museums is free of charge.

The event is also attended by the Municipal Bureau of Art Exhibitions in Leszno (5 Leszczyńskich Street, as well as the Town Hall), as well as the Leszczyńskie Waterworks (water tower, 1 Poniatowskiego Street).

We encourage you to participate in the most important museum event of the year. Attractions include a demonstration of old laundry, guided tours of the exhibition, a historical walk and presentations of previously unknown exhibits.

Workshop "The Art of Taking Care of Clothes"

Inspired by our current temporary exhibition, the workshop will take you back in time, showing you the traditional washing methods that were used before the invention of modern washing machines. During the classes, participants will be able to try their hand at washing on a washboard, hanging and folding laundry, as well as creating their own scented bags. There will also be an opportunity to embroider your own monogram on the canvas.

The treasure of Leszno goldsmithing

We will present a unique monument – an exquisitely crafted mug by Joachim Scholtz, recently acquired for the museum's collection. This valuable work of a local goldsmith not only complements the collection of Leszno's artistic craftsmanship, but also constitutes a material trace of the splendor of the old Leszno and its bourgeois culture.

Conservators of monuments – doctors of works of art

Discover the work of conservators who bring works of art back to life with precision and passion, from paintings to furniture. The meeting is not only an opportunity to learn the secrets of the profession, but also a presentation of selected projects from recent years, made in our museum studio.

6.35 p.m. – 7.00 p.m.

Guided tour of the exhibition "Tales of Old Linen Chest"

During the guided tour of the "Tales of the Old Linen Maker" exhibition, we will look at old types of underwear and how to care for it – from washing and starching to storing it in special furniture. It is a story about care, craftsmanship, order and aesthetics deeply rooted in both bourgeois and folk tradition.

Secrets of the portrait of Maria Leszczyńska

We will take a look at the portrait of Maria Leszczyńska – Queen of France and daughter of King Stanisław Leszczyński – which hides more than meets the eye. It is a story about a woman on the borderline of politics, courtly conventions and family ties, enchanted in a painterly image.

7.35 p.m. – 8.00 p.m.

Historical walk – Hermann Nerger's tenement houses

The historical walk is a unique opportunity to discover the architectural heritage of Leszno associated with one of the most important local builders. During the walk through the town, we will learn the stories of buildings that still testify to Hermann Nerger's success and his influence on the development of the town.

8.00 p.m. – 9.00 p.m. (meeting - Museum hall)

Live music - concert by students of the Leszno music school

The concert of students of the Leszno Music School is a unique opportunity to hear young, talented artists who will take us to the world of classical music with their performances. It is an evening full of emotions and musical passion.

8.05 p.m. – 9.00 p.m.

Militaria in the Museum collections: soldier's clothing

The story, divided into two parts, will allow you to delve into the history of military equipment, from uniforms to headgear such as helmets, showing changes in soldier “fashion” over the centuries. The exhibits presented, apart from their practical significance, reflect the social and cultural contexts of the eras in which they were used.

9.05 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

Judaica in the Museum collections

The story will reveal the cultural and spiritual richness of the Jewish heritage, showing everyday, ritual and artistic objects. These valuable exhibits are a testimony to the history and traditions of the Jews in Leszno.

9.35 p.m. – 10.00 p.m.

The first films in the history of cinema – show

This unusual show will take us on a journey to the beginnings of cinematography, presenting the most famous works of the Lumière brothers and Georges Méliès. It is an opportunity to see pioneering films that revolutionized the way we perceive the moving image and initiated the history of modern cinema.

10.10 p.m. – 11.00 p.m.
