Encounters with Nature – in partnership with the Municipal Greenery Department
The District Museum in Leszno and the Municipal Greenery Department have joined forces to bring participants closer to the natural world around us. Through these joint meetings, attendees can explore nature from various perspectives—ranging from tradition and culture to the direct observation of plants and animals.
Meetings with Nature – together with the Municipal Greenery Department in Leszno
The first meeting, titled "Herbs and Flowers in Traditional Culture," took place at the beginning of August and was dedicated to ancient beliefs, rituals, and traditions associated with plants. Ewa Tomaszewska, an ethnologist from the District Museum in Leszno, spoke about the significance of flowers and herbs in folk culture, their symbolism, and their use in medicine and magic, as well as customs associated with the most important holidays of the year.
During the second meeting, titled "Flower Manufactory," we searched together for plant motifs hidden in the museum's collections and discussed the symbolism of flowers and their place in contemporary customs. To conclude, the participants created their own paper compositions inspired by the plant world, combining creativity with the attentive observation of nature.
The series culminated in a guided walk through the Mini Zoo. Staff members from the District Museum in Leszno and the Mini Zoo shared insights into the history of the site and introduced the figure of Jan Jonston, an eminent naturalist. The meeting also offered a wonderful opportunity to get a closer look at the local flora and fauna, as well as to peek into areas that are usually closed to the public.
We would like to thank the Municipal Greenery Department for their cooperation and for co-hosting these events. Our joint meetings have shown that nature can be explored in many different ways—through history, culture, museum collections, observation, and direct contact with the natural world.
